The Future of Robotics: Facts, Trends and Predictions

Recently, there has been a lot of buzz around robots, and for a good cause. Robots are gradually becoming more and more integrated into our lives. They’ve been integral to the fields of medicine, manufacturing, and space exploration. But, what does this mean for society? We must consider the history of robots and how they’ve evolved to answer this. How will this change in the future, and what do robots mean for the economy and society?

History of Robotics

Isaac Asimov, a Russian-born American science-fiction writer, coined the term “robotics” in his short story “Runabout” in 1942. In his short story, he presented robots as useful servants of man.

The history of robotics traces back over 400 years ago when Leonardo Da Vinci drew up plans for several robot designs; however, they were never constructed due to technological limitations at the time. George C. Devol, an inventor from Louisville, Kentucky, invented the first robots in early 1950s. He designed and patented a reprogrammable manipulator named “Unimate” from “Universal Automation.” He tried hard for the next decade to sell it in the industry.

Joseph Engleberger, a businessman and engineer, bought Devol’s robot patent in the late 1960s and modified it into an industrial robot. He formed a company named Unimation to manufacture and market the robots. Engleberger is renowned as “the Father of Robotics” in the business because of his accomplishments.

Robotics nowadays

After decades of research, robots are still evolving and transforming into other forms. Now, robots are being used for educational purposes, shopping, home care, and even entertainment. Robots are in everything from coffee shops to hospitals and military divisions. They are a lot more advanced than the first industrial robots. Today, we can make robots that move, communicate, collaborate with other robots, and are helpful in many areas of the economy.

It is being used to strengthen and promote our lives. They’re being used to enhance education by educating robots, to increase our lives by improving our self-driving vehicles and improving our social lives through robots such as social robots. But the robot revolution is going to change us as humans. Robots will make us more intelligent, from virtual robot chats and artificial intelligence to robots taking over the human workforce. In our homes, robots are expected to become more common. Robotic vacuum cleaners and floor sweepers may become the rule rather than the exception. Robotics Kitchen is already here to help.

UK-based robotic company Moley Robotics conceived, constructed and released the first robotic kitchen based on a multipurpose cooking platform.

The Future of Robotics

The Future of Robotics question may sound like a gimmick, but let’s just assume that robots are going to take over the world. The most widespread concern about robotics development is that “robots will take over our jobs!” Yes, technology is rapidly evolving, and this has ramifications for the economy. Cab drivers, for example, are expected to be replaced by self-driving automobiles in the future.

On the other hand, Artificial intelligence will most certainly replace tasks rather than jobs in the near future. It will also create new markets and employment, which is fantastic news. For those positions, we may need further education and retraining, but the opportunities will be there.

There will be more rise in the use of modular robots. A modular robot is a robot that can be easily reconfigured and re-programmed as needed. They can be re-programmed for various applications, such as assistance in manufacturing or human-like robots. Artificial Intelligence plays a significant role; it is the technological and scientific effort to build systems capable of performing things that generally necessitate human intelligence. They have the intelligence to learn and adapt to changing conditions, solve problems and interact with the environment.

Predictions for Robotics

2021 & Beyond

There are numerous predictions for the future of robotics and artificial intelligence. But there are two that will be main: the fast-growing healthcare field and robots in manufacturing.

Several companies are involved in healthcare, trying to figure out how to better cater to the needs of elderly people. Pioneering ideas include voice recognition and the use of robots in homes. Meanwhile, health care systems worldwide are looking into the use of robots for their physical therapy departments.

Academics are now working to attain even higher degrees of automation, with robots taking over a growing proportion of production tasks. Manufacturing units can use 3D printing technology to create complex components. Many companies aspire to automate the machine repair process, with issues spotted before they cause breakdowns and parts being manufactured and switched out automatically. This process could lead to machines that can generate and repair themselves in the future. Hungarian mathematician John von Neumann first proposed self-replicating machines in the late 1940s. These machines are now known as Von Neumann.

The following video shows how the Future of Robotics in India is taking shape.

Robots in Society

Robots have become very popular and easy to acquire in recent years. They have a lot of applications in a lot of different industries. But, they also have their drawbacks. Many of the robots that we have are a lot smaller than the average human being, and they can be problematic when it comes to factory work and other physical labour. The size and weight of the robots can cause them to be challenging to navigate in these types of environments.

A variety of drawbacks aside, the overall truth of the matter is that robots are being utilized a lot more in society now than they have been in recent years. They are becoming more widespread. Meanwhile, Japan is using robots in a completely different capacity. They’re building a robot nanny for the elderly to help care for the sick and the elderly. The Japanese hope that robots can help care for an ageing society.

Conclusion

From assembly lines to hospitals, it’s challenging to find a place that doesn’t use robots in some capacity. This is because they are becoming smarter, smaller, cheaper, and faster than ever before. Robots are an important element of our lives. Robots have come far in recent years, from helping with the hard work to teaching us things.
Robotics is one of the most rapidly rising sectors. It has been predicted that there will be more robots than people in manufacturing plants and warehouses around the world in a few years. The Future of Robotics depends on how humans will give them shape. Robotic technology will become more advanced and sophisticated as time goes on, and we’ll see an increase in robot-human interaction.

FAQ

Q1. What are the laws of robotics?

Ans. Isaac Asimov created the Three Laws of Robotics in 1941 and 1942. These regulations were a fictitious attempt to safeguard humanity from danger, and they didn’t work. Asimov’s own theories often reveal this. No robot uses these three laws any longer. Instead, we have experts in AI, ethics, and morals who can help us create and use robots safely and ethically. Some researchers also want to empower robots by allowing them to make ethical and moral decisions for themselves.

Q2. What is a “humanoid robot”?

Ans. A humanoid robot is one whose general look is similar to the human body. Humanoid robots typically have a torso with a head, two arms, and two legs. Certain humanoid robots may merely replicate a portion of the body, such as the waist up. Some humanoid robots may feature a ‘face,’ complete with eyes and a mouth.

Some robots are more realistically developed with flesh-like material, such as – Androids are humanoid robots designed to look like male humans. In contrast, Gynoids are humanoid robots designed to seem like female humans.

Q3. Is robotics dangerous for humans?

Ans. Even walking on the road is risky. If a weapon is in our hands, then it’s our wish how to use it. If used wisely, robots will only help humans save themselves from various dangers. These include working in hazardous nuclear-affected areas, dealing with dangerous chemicals/gases, bomb searching, mining, fireworks, welding, and many other dangerous works.
